Exploring Leadership in NGO's: An Appreciative Inquiry


Leadership Research Project:

Directors of Adolescent focused NGO's (Non-Government Organisation) in Canterbury, New Zealand.
Exploration and reflection on leadership beliefs, values and actions in a collaborative manner with peers in similar roles over a 8 month period. (Nov 2008 - July 2009)

Appreciative Inquiry Format:

- internationally proven process -
“Appreciative Inquiry focuses on supporting people getting together to tell stories of positive development in their work that they can build on.”
It identifies the best of what is happening in the present moment to pursue what is possible in the future.
Four stages - Initiate, Inquire, Imagine, and Innovate

Key Areas Of Inquiry:

“What beliefs, values and actions characterise leaders in adolescent focussed NGO's in NZ when they are operating at their peak?”

“What impact does exploring NGO leadership appreciatively have on practice?”

Intended Outcomes:

  • Capability building of current and emerging leaders within this sector,
  • Collaborative design of a dynamic model of leadership for adolescent focussed NGO's in New Zealand,
  • Exploring an effective process within which to develop these leadership competencies.
